New rules boost Canadian citizenship applications

Canadian citizenship applications more than doubled

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) reported that the applications for Canadian citizenship status increased by over 130% in 9 months after rules changed in October 2017. During the period some 242,680 applications were received, compared to 102,261 applications received over the same period in 2016-2017.

Canadian citizenship requirements and rules have changed

The IRCC stated that the number of people receiving Canadian citizenship is on the rise thanks to revised rules that have made it easier to obtain. Bill C-6, Changes to the Citizenship Act, came into effect on October 11, 2017. It ushered in a new quicker, simpler citizenship naturalization process for individuals with Canadian permanent resident status.

Previously, applicants for citizenship had to have accumulated 1,460 days (four years) of residence in Canada within a six-year period. All of 1,460 days must be acquired on permanent status, before applying for citizenship. Under the changed rules, applicants are only required to have 1,095 days (three years) of residence in Canada over a five-year period.

Further, new rules apply to applicants who spent time in Canada on work or study status or as a protected person before becoming a permanent resident. They may count up to 365 days of this time as a temporary resident towards their overall residency days requirements.

In a statement marking Citizenship Week (October 8 to 14), Canada’s Immigration Minister, Ahmed Hussen, stated that:

“The Government made important changes to the Citizenship Act, under Bill C‑6, to provide those wanting to become Canadian citizens with greater flexibility to meet the requirements. One year later, we can see the difference these changes are making.”

Canadian citizenship requirements and citizenship test for Canada

Canadian citizenship is one of the most sought citizenships globally because of the opportunities it provides. For example, Canadian citizens (and nor permanent residents) may apply for and obtain a Canadian passport, one of the most valuable passports in the world. Further, citizens can leave and re-enter Canada without needing to be mindful of residency requirements for the purpose of maintaining status. Citizens may also vote and stand for political office, giving them full participation in one of the world’s great democracies.

It is recommended that you make your application and take your citizenship test for Canada as soon as you can in order to begin to enjoy its benefits. For step-by-step instructions and requirements to become a Canadian citizen, visit Canadian Citizenship Requirements
