How to confirm your Canadian Permanent Residence status on IRCC portal

Canadian PR status portal update. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has updated how you can confirm your Canadian permanent residence status on its website.

IRCC says that if you receive an email about the Permanent Residence Portal, it’s legitimate if it

  • came from an email address ending in
  • is in both English and French
  • the subject line is “IRCC – Permanent Residence Portal (PR Confirmation) / Portail de résidence permanente (Confirmation de la RP)”
  • it links to IRCC PR status update information

What you can do in Canadian PR status portal

Through Canadian PR status portal, Canadian permanent residents can

  • declare they are in Canada
  • confirm their address
  • submit a recent photo to make their Canada PR card
  • access their proof of permanent resident (PR) status
  • share personal information safely and securely with Immigration, Refuges and Citizenship Canada (IRCC)

As the principal applicant, you’ll access and act in the portal on behalf of

  • your minor dependants (under 18 at the time you applied for permanent residence) and
  • any other dependants you choose (over 18 at the time you applied)

IRCC creates profiles for them in the portal under your account. If you’re not acting on their behalf, each member of your family will have their own username and password.

How Canadian PR status portal works

You may pre-qualify for a Canada immigration program.

Once IRCC approves your PR application, IRCC will

  • send you an invitation to confirm
    • if you want to use the portal
    • your email address
    • all email addresses for each person on your application
  • create an account for you (you can’t create one yourself)
  • send another email, after you confirm the above. This second email has a link to the portal. It also has instructions on how to sign in with your username and a temporary password

After you receive that second email from IRCC, you can

  1. sign in for the first time and create your own password
  2. confirm you are in Canada
  3. provide an updated home or postal address
  4. upload your photo (this must be a digital or scanned photo, not a picture of a paper photo taken with a camera or phone)

Once IRCC reviews and accepts the photo you submit it will show in the portal and you should get your PR card within one week.

You will receive your PR card in the mailing address in Canada that you gave in your application. You can check to see if IRCC accepted your photo through the portal.
