First Express Entry Draw of 2018: 446 CRS score, 2,750 ITAs

The first Express Entry draw for 2018 was held today. The IRCC invited 2,750 candidates to apply for permanent residence who had a score of 446+.  This is now the 4th draw in a row with the same number of people invited (2,750).

In 2017, 88,000 people were selected in Express Entry system, under the Federal Skilled Worker program.  The quota for 2018 is expected to be 5% higher.

The usual trend for Express Entry is for the IRCC to select a greater number of candidates at the beginning of the year compared to the end of the year, resulting in lower CRS scores. This practice by the IRCC is to ensure the quota for landed immigrants for the year is met.  The over-selection of candidates at the start of the year is to accommodate the refused applications that will occur during the year, most of which are submitted by individuals applying on their own.

With start of the new year, it is the ideal time to start the immigration process if you are considering a move to Canada. The trend in CRS score is expected to follow the same pattern as last year; the IRCC will soon begin selecting larger number of candidates, resulting in much lower CRS scores.  Last year saw a new CRS low of 413.  We expect a few draws in the coming months to see scores around 415.
